Friday Evening

Arrive in Bay City and begin your journey through Matagorda County's history at the Matagorda County Museum. Through exhibits highlighting agriculture, rice production, coastal commerce, military service, and everyday life, the museum provides an excellent introduction to the history of the region.

While there, be sure to explore the museum's exhibits related to La Belle, one of French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle's ships that sank along the Texas coast in 1686. The discovery and excavation of the vessel provided one of the most significant archaeological finds in Texas history and offers a fascinating glimpse into early European exploration of the Gulf Coast.

As you stroll through downtown after the museum, you'll discover historic architecture and several historical markers that offer a preview of the weekend ahead.

Afterward, enjoy dinner at El Zarape Cafe. Locally owned for over 80 years, the menu is carefully crafted to honor the recipes of the restaurant’s founders.  A longtime local favorite, El Zarape has welcomed generations of residents and visitors alike, making it a fitting stop for the weekend.
